Mindsets That Prevent Creativity 5

I happened along a photography post, from fstoppers.com that succinctly describes 5 mindsets that keep us from creating what we love.

And even though the article is about photography I think the wisdom is universal and we can apply it to all our different creative habits.

I have the original post linked in the text.

5 Unproductive Mindsets That Keep You From Becoming a Better Landscape Photographer

#5 Art Requires Perfection

The post says, and I agree, that shooting for perfection is not so bad.

But, expecting to reach perfection is.

I love this quote from Tal Ben-Shahar in his book The Persuit of Perfect.

“If the only dream we have is of a perfect life, we are doomed to disappointment since such dreams simply cannot come true in the real world.”

And Tony Robins has said that perfection is the lowest possible standard we can reach for, because it’s unobtainable.

In many of us perfection is not on the forefront of our minds.

We aren’t thinking that we have to get this piece of art perfect.

But what we are thinking is that we want to avoid any failures.

Again, Tal Ben-Shahar has some wise words here.

“In essence, Perfectionists reject everything that deviates from their flawless, faultless ideal vision, and as a result they suffer whenever they do not meet their own unrealistic standards. Optimalists accept, and make the best of, everything that life has to offer.”

Optimalists accept reality and expect failures and hope to learn from them.

I have to chuckle at that.

You only have to look at my website to see how many times I’ve failed.

Skills are gained through failures.

Resilient creators embrace failure and learn.

None of us are perfect and none of us will be.

We are all wonderfully imperfect human beings!

So how about you?

Got any perfectionists tendencies that are preventing you from embracing your humanity and opportunity to learn?

How about today we all have more compassion with ourselves. Love life and all our faults and get back to creating consistently.
